Reality-Based Self-Defense Workshop

This Self-Defense Workshop Will Teach You Something About Yourself

Knowing what to do when everything is calm is different from trying to do it when someone is resisting you.

As the training progresses, we gradually introduce resistance and pressure. This gives you an opportunity to discover what happens to you when things become more difficult.

Do you freeze? Do you forget what you just learned? Do you become overwhelmed?

Or do you discover that you can continue thinking, responding, and working through more pressure than you expected?

Either way, there’s value in finding out.

If you don’t like how you responded to a simulated attack, you’ve identified something you can work on. If you handle the pressure better than you expected, you’ve learned something about yourself there too.

Training cannot completely reproduce the reality of an actual violent encounter. But we can progressively introduce pressure, resistance, and stress so those things aren’t entirely unfamiliar if you ever encounter them for real.

Training like this matters, because you don’t want to find out how your mind and body react during a REAL attack.

Simplicity / One-to-Many Model

Simplicity Matters.

When you’re facing a real threat, there will be pressure and resistance from the attacker. The last thing you want to depend on is a complicated technique with multiple steps you have to remember.

That’s why in Kalah we focus on simple, effective principles that are easier to remember and can be applied across different attack scenarios.

You learn the principle. You practice it. Then you learn to apply that same principle against different attack scenarios.

That’s a one-to-many defense model.

Under stress and high adrenaline, thinking clearly and performing complicated movements can become more difficult, which is another reason simplicity matters. That’s not the time you want to depend on remembering a complex sequence of steps.

When things become difficult, you want something simple enough to remember and effective enough to apply under pressure and resistance.

Test Your Plan

You May Already Have a Plan. But Have You Ever Tested It?

Most people have thought about what they would do if they were attacked.

Maybe you would fight back. Maybe you would run. Maybe you carry a firearm or another means of protecting yourself. You may already have a plan in your mind for how you would respond.

But have you ever tried to execute that plan while someone was actively resisting you?

A plan that makes sense when you're thinking about it calmly can feel very different when another person is moving, resisting, applying pressure, or interfering with what you're trying to do.

That doesn't mean your plan is wrong.

It means you don't know how effective your plan is until you've experienced what happens when things don't go according to plan.

Kalah training gives you an opportunity to work through simulated attacks where resistance and pressure are progressively introduced. You can see what works, where you struggle, and what you may need to change.

You may discover that your instincts and your plan work better than you expected. Or you may discover a weakness you didn't know was there.

Either discovery is better made in training than during the moment you actually need your plan.

Never Trained Before? That's Okay.

You Don't Need Self-Defense Experience to Start Learning How to Defend Yourself.

NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Maybe you've thought about learning self-defense before, but you've never taken a class.

You might wonder if you need martial arts experience, if you'll be able to keep up, or if everyone else will already know what they're doing.

You don't need any previous martial arts or self-defense experience for this workshop.

We start by teaching you the principles. You learn how they work. You practice them with a partner. Then, as you become more familiar with what you're doing, we progressively introduce resistance and pressure to make the experience more realistic.

You're going to make mistakes. That's part of training.

You'll have time to ask questions, get coached, try again, and continue practicing so you leave the workshop with something you actually understand and can build on.

That's why we scheduled four hours for this workshop.

You don't have to walk through the door already knowing how to defend yourself.

That's why you're coming to learn.

Different Threats. Same Principles.

The Attack May Change, But the Principles Don't.

A real attack isn't going to happen exactly the way you imagined it.

The position may be different. The attacker may move differently. The weapon may come from a different direction.

That's why you don't want to depend on one memorized technique for one specific situation. Then another technique for another situation.

During the workshop, we'll work through different attack scenarios, including common knife and firearm threats, while applying the same core principles you've been learning.

You'll work on protecting your vital areas, looking for opportunities to fight back, dealing with the weapon-bearing arm, establishing control, and striking the attacker to survive.

Then we change the problem.

Different position. Different threat. Different resistance. Same Principle.

Can you recognize what needs to happen and apply the principles you've learned instead of searching your memory for a different technique?

That's the goal.

The attack can change. The principles you depend on remain the same.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is for people with jobs, families, responsibilities, and limited time who want practical self-defense training without feeling like they need to make martial arts their lifestyle.

You may want to learn how to defend yourself, but that doesn't necessarily mean you want to spend years training in martial arts or working your way through belts before you start learning something practical.

You may simply want to become better prepared.

That's who this workshop is for.

It’s for people with busy lives who want an opportunity to learn practical self-defense, understand the principles behind what they’re doing, and apply those principles under pressure and resistance.

You don't need to become a martial artist.

You don't need to rearrange your life around training.

You just need to be willing to come in, learn, practice, and see what you're capable of.
